Question about weather proof sealants?

I am working/ hand painting a sign that will be displayed outside of a small business. Could you recommend a good weather proof sealer? I did buy DeckScapes clear deck seal but I'm scared to apply it. I'm under the impression that you must apply it to untreated, unpainted surfaces, Please help. Thanks.
