What typeface is used for the notation of orbitals (s, p, d, f, sigma, pi, etc.) - normal or italic (cursive)?

I have seen several textbooks writing orbitals in italics (= cursive) and some other books using normal typeface. So far, I have been used to write orbitals in italics - is it correct? Please, write which notation is correct and which one you personally prefer.
